Cool Country Careers – A Florist in Paarl
This month we feature Tania Viljoen. Tania lives in a beautiful old Victorian flat on the Main Street of Paarl, just a short walk from her job at Kikka, the funky coffee shop/florist/deli where she works as a florist.
We interviewed Tania about life and work in the country, and this is what she had to say.
Describe the nature of your work:
My job entails working with flowers in all means and ways! It ranges from making up bunches and arrangements on demand to weddings and functions, everyday is completely different and exciting!
Why did you choose this work?
The work kind of chose me. I fell in love with the thought of working with flowers. I tried it and to my surprise it came very naturally!
What do you like most about your job?
Being surrounded by beautiful flowers all day long of course! There are a few things – the most satisfying thing on earth is to see someone smile when given a bunch of flowers or a happy bride on the most special day of her life and being a part of it!
What qualifications or skills do you need to do this job?
I had no qualifications at all and I don’t think you need any. All you need for a success recipe is willingness to learn, perseverance (flowers are hard work), people skills and creativity!
What do you like most about where you live?
I like quiet! I’ve tried city life, but nothing compares to living in a beautiful and peaceful place like Paarl. I think it’s great to be able to walk down the street and know and greet almost all the faces! It’s close enough to everything-mountains, sea and shopping- and just far enough to feel peaceful.
What do you do in your leisure time?
I love walking, gardening, having dinner with friends and red wine of course – who wouldn’t we are surrounded by it!
What advice do you have for anyone wishing to do similar work?
Trust your gut feeling, if you think you can do it, try it, you probably can! Nothing in life is impossible without lots of hard work and lots of love.
