Job Description

We are looking for a suitable, self-motivating individual that can be appointed as the Farm Manager of a 360ha mountain farm situated approximately 20km outside of Montagu, Western Cape.

The farm is currently 100% undeveloped, with a short- to medium term view to become an income-producing organic farm focusing on moringa trees, nut trees, olive trees (approx. 8ha in total) and greenhouse/ tunnel farming of herbs and medicinal plants. In time, the farm may be further developed for tourism (4X4 track and accommodation).

This opportunity will be ideal for someone who enjoy “creating something from nothing” and has a love for nature.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Farm Manager will be responsible for the overall management and leadership functions of the farm including production, harvesting, labour management and project management.

Job responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Oversee building construction of 1st cottage – immediate priority
  • Planning and implementation of water supply and irrigation management (water supply – immediate priority)
  • Oversee building construction of farm house
  • Land preparation for planting (approx. 8 ha)
  • Establish and oversee new organic orchards (moringa, nut and olive trees)
  • Establish and oversee new organic greenhouse/ tunnel farming (herbs and medicinal plants) – potential for hydroponics farming
  • Effective workforce coordination and management
  • Record keeping and Administration management
  • Assist with Business Planning (pricing, cost planning, etc.)
  • Interaction with Processing and Distribution centres
  • Oversee of any livestock (non-commercial)
  • Inspect, maintain and repair of mechanical and other equipment, buildings, yards and fences
  • Identify and develop new income-generating opportunities
  • Accurate and effective communication with owners, suppliers, workers and customers

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Matric qualification
  • Agriculture or any other tertiary qualification will be beneficial
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Bi-lingual (Afrikaans/English), isiXhosa would be beneficial
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in orchard and herb farming
  • Integrate network connections of industry entities and individuals – for applicable industries as set out in the “responsibilities” section
  • Administrative and management experience
  • People management and coordination experience
  • Basic computer literacy in MS Office (excel, outlook, word) and internet usage
  • Basic financial management, including budgeting
  • Understanding of agricultural and labour legislation, and other applicable regulations
  • Physically able to perform duties as set out in “responsibilities” section

REMUNERATION
Salary negotiable according to experience.
